So, your LiftMaster garage door opener has the error code 4-6? We can help you self-diagnose why your garage door opener is giving you the 4-6 error code and what to do about it.

Understanding LiftMaster Error Codes

The “up” and “down” arrows on your LiftMaster will determine what error code your garage door

opener is experiencing. This is done through particular light patterns to specify what the problem is. For the LiftMaster 4-6 error code, the “up” button will flash 4 times, and the “down” button will flash 6 times. This error code usually happens when you try to close your garage door.

The LiftMaster Error Code 4-6 is related to your safety sensors. With this error code, your garage door will not work properly. Garage door safety sensors are required by law for the safety of consumers, so when there is something wrong with your sensors, your garage door system will stop working. There must be two garage door safety sensors on either side of your garage door; if there are not, the garage door opener will have a 4-6 error code.

Possible Causes for the Error Code 4-6

Blocked Sensor

Most commonly, for a regularly functioning garage door, it will have this error code if there is dirt or debris on your garage door sensors. Try cleaning your sensors with a damp paper towel. Also, it can be an object in the path of the sensor, which can prevent the door from closing.

Misaligned Sensors

If the sensors are misaligned, the door will not close. Check the receiving sensor for a solid green light; this ensures that your garage door sensors are correctly aligned.

Incorrectly Installed Sensors

The installation of safety sensors is crucial. If sensors are not installed correctly, installed on the wrong side, or not installed at all, then the garage door opener will not function. Check the sensor wires for damage or splitting and ensure that the black and white wires are correctly connected to the corresponding colors.
